Speeding Tickets
Florida imposes harsh penalties for speeding violations, especially if you were caught driving more than ten miles per hour over the posted speed limit. Depending on the speed at which you were measured and whether certain other circumstances existed, you may face additional penalties.
Basic Speeding Ticket Punishments
The fines and license points for basic levels of speeding above the posted or legal speed limit are as follows:
- 1-5 miles per hour over the posted speed limit: warning
- 6-9 miles per hour: $25 and three points
- 10-14 miles per hour: $100 and three points
- 15-19 miles per hour: $125 and four points
- 20-29 miles per hour: $150 and four points
- 30 miles per hour or more: $250 and four points
Additional Penalties
In addition to the basic levels of speeding tickets described above, the fines and punishments can increase if the speeding occurs in specific areas or under certain circumstances, including the following:
- School Zone: A person speeding from one to five miles per hour in a legally posted school zone will face a $50 fine. For six miles per hour and above, the fines listed above are doubled.
- Construction Zone: If there is a posted construction zone that includes notification of a reduced speed limit and warns drivers about doubled speeding fines, a person cited for speeding in these zones faces a double fine if the construction personnel are present or working on the road or immediately next to the road.
- Penalty Zone: A person speeding from one to five miles per hour in a legally posted enhanced penalty zone faces a $50 fine. For six miles per hour and above, the fines listed above are doubled.
- Repeat Citations: A person cited for a second conviction for speeding in excess of 30 miles over the posted speed limit within a 12 month period faces a double fine.
