EZ Pass Violations
Unlike many states on the east coast, the Florida highway system does not accept EZ Pass transponders or payments on their toll roads or bridges. Florida’s toll system, SunPass, is not compatible with the EZ Pass system, and using an EZ Pass on a Florida road is the equivalent of not paying a toll at all. The Law Office of Eduardo Meire, P.A. helps drivers in Broward County, Miami-Dade County, and Fort Lauderdale by explaining EZ Pass violations and how to avoid them.
EZ Pass Violations
When driving on any of Florida’s toll roads or bridges, you must have an active and prepaid SunPass, Lee-Way or O-Pass transponder in your car. If you have an EZ Pass from New York, New Jersey, or any of the other states that utilize the EZ Pass system, the SunPass system will not record or charge your account, and you will be fined and charged with a Florida toll violation. The cameras at the toll plaza will record your license plate number, and even if you live out of state you can be fined according to Florida statue. These fines begin at $100, and can grow quickly as other costs mount.
To avoid incurring traffic violations while traveling on Florida’s toll roads and bridges, do not attempt to use your EZ Pass transponder to pay for tolls. Instead, a SunPass transponder can be purchased for roughly $25 from a Publix Supermarket or a CVS pharmacy. By making sure you have a working SunPass transponder, you can help yourself avoid fines and citations or SunPass violations for attempting to use an out of state EZ Pass.
If you have received an EZ Pass violation citation, the Law Office of Eduardo Meire in Broward County, Miami-Dade County, and Fort Lauderdale may be able to help you.
